Nowadays, there are many sectors which have decided to maximize sustainability. In the construction business, sustainable architecture, eco-architecture or eco-design concepts are a growing trend. So, today we can speak about terms like Green Home, Passive House or Zero Energy House, examples of buildings which prioritize efficiency, sustainability and profitability.
Scarcity of resources and a new social awareness have given birth to this new understanding of construction which not only focuses on utility and beauty, it also takes environmental impact into account.
Today we´d like to focus on Green Homes, highlighting this kind of homes´ main features and show you a few examples we have considered worth mentioning and analyzing.
What are Green Homes?
Green Homes aim for an efficient use of energy, water and construction materials. Their goal is to get rid of stuff that can cause a negative impact on the environment. They´re a type of house designed to be either ecological and sustainable.
We can highlight three main features which set this kind of homes apart.
- Reduced Energy Consumption During the construction stage as well as during the usage stage of the dwelling.
- Reduced impact on the environment. El reducido impacto ambiental en el entorno. Ewhich means the right blending of the building withc the physical environment, blending into the surrounding area.
- Efficient water management for instance, collecting residual or neighboring riverine water.

Each day, there are more and more buidings that can be found around the world that gravitate around sustainable and ecological architecture. Nosotros We have decided to show 5 astonishing examples which help raising awareness over the actual possibility to alleviate a negative impact on the environment.
• House 34 in Chile
Amidst the wilderness some 900km south of Santiago this house designed by Izquierdo Lehmann Arquitectos can be found. Large picture windows keep every ambience naturally fresh and allow enjoying the view of the lake and its surroundings. The green roof allows for the full integration of the house within the landscape besides allowing a proper isolation and natural cooling. The wooden floors have been made locally, which ensures the dwelling to sit in complete harmony with its surroundings.
• Upcycle House in Denmark
The house is an experimental project which has demonstrated how the use of recycled materials have reduced carbon emissions up to 86% compared to a reference house. It strives to transmit the principles of Upcycling, a reconverting process of waste materials into new products of a better quality. This detached house has been developed by Realdania Byg, A Danish foundation which fosters innovation and good practice in the construction business in collaboration with Lendager Architecs.
• Songlines in Ibiza
The house is an experimental project which has demonstrated how the use of recycled materials have reduced carbon Another example of landscape integration, this dwelling is located in the township of the Sant Josep de Sa Talaia en la isla de Ibiza. It´s a project carried out by Cpm Ibiza in collaboration with Mixis Arquitectos. The house increases its elevation following the natural relieve line of its surroundings, thus lessening its impact. The restoration of neighboring green areas that has taken place is also a byproduct of this integration process. Indigenous vegetation has been used as a transitioning element between the garden and the wood areas. The west-to-east orientation of the dwelling, reduction of cold bridging and a proper isolation of the decks, building façades and the concrete walls, as well as on floors and windows involve an efficient air-condtioning of the dwelling and subsequently an energy-saving feature. The house is also equipped with a rainwater harvesting system which allows for the collection of rainwater for the maintenance and watering of the garden.
• Hotel Bellandia in Ecuador
We are aware of the fact that this is not a detached house. However, it has caught our attention enough to dedicate an space for it in our blog. This hotel is located in the Equatorian Amazon forest and it consists of two cabins, but very particular at that. The soil and vegetation layer grants them their effect of bio-acclimatization. They have been built using Green Magic Homes technology a bulding system of pre-fabricated modules which uses the most ancient of construction materials: earth soil.
• BioCasa 82 in Italy
It´s the first dwelling in Europe to have been awarded the LEED certificate(Leader in Energy efficiency and Sustainable Design) a prestigious acknowledgement because of it being environment-friendly. It´s located in Northeastern Italy in the Veneto Countryside, and it was designed by architect Thomas Biroli. The Welldom Method was used in its construction process, a method that combines advanced construction techniques in the field of sustainable bio-conditioning engineering reaching maximum confort. Some of its key features are the recovery of 100% of rainwater and the implmentation of state-of-the-art LED technology lights.
